Back in June, Northern Lakes College postponed its grad because of wildfires. The new date didn’t work for the venue in High Prairie, so the grad was held in Slave Lake at the Gathering Place on Sept. 12 and 13.
Kimberly Poitras, formerly of Slave Lake, is taking the swimming world by storm. She started swimming very young, but this year with Team Canada sychro tryouts she didn’t have time to train for speed swimming. Even with this disadvantage, she won or placed second in all her races during the Alberta Summer Swimming Association speed swimming provincials.
Slave Lake community discussion on Facebook has become an important part of the Slave Lake community. Sharon Watchel didn’t start the page, but has been the sole moderator for the last three or four years.
Moderating the Facebook page is “a fun thing to do,” Watchel says.
