On Oct. 25, the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation will hold their annual Halloween event for all ages, offering a fun way to learn science during the holiday.

“This year it will be all about decomposers,” says Patti Campsall, Executive Director of the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory. “We have been doing this event for about 15 years.”

Campsall said that there are different Halloween activities available in the Boreal Centre. Each year, there is also a different theme. And this year, it will be a fungi themed, where kids and other attendees can mostly learn about fungi, insects, and bacteria.

The Halloween event will be on Oct. 25 from noon to 3 p.m. There will be crafts, games, and a scavenger hunt.

Another highlight of the event is pumpkin bowling, where they use real pumpkins, says Campsall.

“Kids can come with their Halloween costumes too,” Campsall adds.

Campsall shares that there were at least 200 attendees in past years, even though it’s only a three hour event.

“This is a great way of connecting kids to the fun of science,” says Campsall. “The kids are learning without realizing they are learning. They are just having fun.”

This Halloween program is sponsored by the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory, Lesser Slave Forest Education Society, and Alberta Parks.
