On April 19, Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory (LSLBO) banded this sharp-shinned hawk, which weighed about the same as average robin.
Robyn Perkins LSLBO band-in-charge says, “most raptors are sexually dimorphic (occuring in two distict forms) and males are distinctly smaller than females. That hawk was very small even by male SSHA (a bird species code for sharp-shinned hawks) standards, but healthy and that is all info that we can record by capturing these birds.”
Readers can look forward to another series of articles on the activities and observations at the banding station, beginning very soon.
