Slave Lake student Nikosis Storm Isadore has received honourable mention for a province-wide Indigenous award. Isadore is a band member of Driftpile Cree Nation and a student at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy. Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Awards gives out 12 awards for students across Alberta.
“It was a huge accomplishment for Nikosis to receive an honourable mention,” says a St. Francis of Assisi news release. “This award is given to students who showcase exemplary leadership, honour, courage and commitment to their cultures and education.”
St. Francis staff nominated Isadore for the award.
In the news release, Isadore’s teacher David Waselenak says, “Nikosis demonstrates leadership within St. Francis on a daily basis; is a model of positive behaviour for all students.”
One of his other teachers, Laelle Mannion says, “Nikosis is a strong student in all of his classes and is a shining example of what it means to be focused, hard-working, generous and giving.”
The nomination letter highlights his perseverance, maintaining a healthy identity, modeling leadership through a strong cultural lens, strong work ethic and above all, treating others with respect, kindness, and dignity.
On May 24, the Living Waters Catholic School board acknowledged Isadore’s accomplishments at its meeting at St. Francis.
