On April 18, local pilot Brian Vance offered to take Lakeside Leader staff up in the air to take some aerial photos. Here are a few of the photos taken of the south shore of Lesser Slave Lake and the northern edge of the Swan Hills, including Flat Top just south of Slave Lake.
The Town of Slave Lake is in the foreground. The eastern end of the east basin of Lesser Slave Lake takes up the middle left, including Dog Island. The Marten Hills are on the top. The bluer portion of the lake is the head of the Lesser Slave River, which is the only outflow of Lesser Slave Lake. It flows eastward out of the lake. The two ponds in the middle right don’t appear to be named.
The middle of Lesser Slave Lake from the southeast. From left to right (west to east), west basin, the narrows, east basin, Swan Point, and Auger Bay along the south shore of Lesser Slave Lake.
On the south shore of Lesser Slave Lake, the Jean-Luc Deba Memorial Park, Canyon Creek Hotel and Canyon Creek Campground and Marina. The ice on the edge is starting to melt, but the ice roads to where the fishing shacks used to be are still visible from the boat launch. South Shore Drive and CN railway tracks are in the foreground.
South of the narrows – Kinuso from the west. Kinuso School is in the bottom right. Kinuso Merchantile is the building with the red stripe on Main St. The Kinuso Elevator is just past the CN railway tracks on the north (left).
The Slave Lake Healthcare Centre in the foreground with Schurter Park on the right. The rest of the view is southeast Slave Lake. The large building with the red stipes on top is Roland Michener Secondary School. The high country south of Slave Lake is the Swan Hills. The most distant hill is Flat Top.
Flat Top Fire Watch Tower is near Florida Lake in the Swan Hills south of Slave Lake.
