Family Violence Prevention workshop РNovember is Family Violence Prevention Month. The Slave Lake RCMP and Victim Services has a free, one-day workshop on family violence  prevention. The topics are strangulation, sexual assault, and digital parenting. The guest speakers are Morag McLean (RN and expert on helping victims of strangulation) and Dragonfly Centre, which offers counselling and other services to victims of sexual violence and their support people in Slave Lake and Wabasca.

Time: November 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Location: Slave Lake Legion

Cost: free.

Morag McLean is a registered nurse with over 35 years of experience in the health-care field. For the past 14 years, she has worked in women’s shelters providing nursing services to individuals fleeing domestic violence. Her area of interest is assessing and caring for victims of strangulation. In 2009, she developed a protocol to help frontline professionals identify and care for victims of strangulation. This protocol is now used by local, national, and international criminal justice, health care and community advocates. Morag provides training and consulting services to a number of local and national agencies and is a qualified expert witness in matters related to criminal prosecution of strangulation assaults. Morag is a recipient of the Peace in Families award and the Victorian Order of Nurses Gold Award for innovation for her work with victims of violence.
