Northern Haven Support Society (NHSS) has received a food security grant.
Shelly Ferguson, NHSS executive director says, “NHSS received an additional (and welcomed) grant of $7,690 to assist with food security during the 2023-24 grant year. The rising cost of food has affected shelter program spending over the past year and it has impacted our clients greatly. The rising cost of living has been a hardship on most of the families we support.”
NHSS supports victims of domestic violence in Slave Lake. This includes running a women’s shelter, supporting both women and men through community services, and raising awareness through its outreach program.
The grant will be used at the shelter and to support low-income at-risk families in the community. Details on the community program are in the works.
This money comes from an Alberta government grant to support shelters across Alberta. The grant also has $1.6 million toward prevention including a counselling program for male abusers. It also has money to help people apply for information about a person’s domestic violence convictions under Clare’s Law.
