February 8 to 10, Northern Lakes College (NLC) held a welding camp for youths aged 13 to 15 in Slave Lake. The last NLC camp of this kind was in 2019, also in Slave Lake.

The news release says that the previous camps were held in Wabasca in 2016, High Prairie in 2017, High Level in 2018, and Slave Lake in 2019.

This camp is at the Slave Lake Trades and Technology Centre near the Slave Lake Airport.

In the news release, Angie White, Chair of Trades & Resource Technology at Northern Lakes College, says, “This camp is a great opportunity for junior high youth to learn about the welding trade by exploring the welding shop, building confidence with skills, and discovering if a future welding career interests them.”

The camp is taught by NLC welding instructors. Students learn to use hand tools, basic arc welding, welding safety and welding symbols. They also tour the welding shop and heavy equipment repair shops. Students complete a project that they can take home.

NLC also offers dual credit courses which combine high school and post-secondary credits. These include apprenticeships such as welding and other courses.
