Community members and some school students painted small squares last week to be part of a mosaic, which will be put up in Slave Lake.

Karen Lamarche, Grade 1 teacher at C.J. Schurter Elementary School in Slave Lake, chose to have her class take part. In Grade 1, her students learn about community as part of the curriculum.

It can be difficult for children to learn about community if they aren’t part of dance or sports, she says. Painting a piece of the mural she hopes will give them “a sense of pride and ownership,” when they see it in the years to come.

Years ago, when Slave Lake painted another mural, Lamarche and her family took part. That one is of a man ice fishing in the Multi Rec Centre.

The new mural is a project by the Town of Slave Lake, with funds from a federal grant called the Reopening Fund.

The mural will honour front-line workers, says Tasha Albert, Slave Lake’s Director of Community Services. Along with the schools, there were public sessions on two afternoons and evenings. The location of the mural hasn’t been decided yet, but it will be outdoors.
