Chastin Martel
For Lakeside Leader

For the month of April, Lakeside Outreach students took part in a week-long course known as ‘CALM Blitz.’

CALM stands for Career and Life Management. It contributes to student wellness and health literacy, as students learn different life-management strategies, such as career management, the good and bad of social media, personal identity and even community wellness.

As this course was multiple days long, students did not leave empty handed, as LSO awarded each student with five credits.

Despite the dreaded thought of sitting in a chair and desk all day, LSO students had the amazing opportunity to tour different facilities in the Slave Lake region for CALM Blitz, such as the forestry building and Slave Lake Helicopters.

Courtney Harrington, wellness coach at Outreach, said the Calm course was a “Success! Everyone was so engaged to learn.”

Additionally in April, the Lakeside Outreach building was lit up with green and gold to honour the Humboldt Broncos crash in April 2018. On April 6th, 2018, 16 players for the Humboldt Broncos were killed when a semi-truck failed to yield at a highway intersection. This really is an unforgettable matter, as the players were just beginning their lives. In honor of this unfortunate matter, LSO held green shirt day to honour the Humboldt Broncos crash victims.

A diverse education system is always in favour at Lakeside Outreach as students are able to get easy access to almost every potential career opportunity through career coach Monica Edwards.

With the guidance of Edwards, students obtain employment, get into community colleges, and participate in trade programs.

On April 22, 2022, Arlen Brownless, a student from Outreach participated, at the Slave Lake Northern Lakes College in a welding and carpentry learning session.

It is always a great turnout when you have the opportunity to learn what you’re most passionate about.

The race to the finish line for the school year is near and students are hard at work.

LSO looks forward to a May with more sunshine and more course completions.
