For the past month, a small light has shone from the steeple of St. Peter Celestin Catholic Church in Slave Lake. But for one longtime community member, it is more than just a light. She had it installed as a symbol of hope for the community. About 60 to 65 years ago, she was a member of the Catholic Girls’ Club in Slave Lake and also supported the Christopher Missions. Its motto, “It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness,” stayed with her through the years. Now, that message shines above Slave Lake. She hopes the light offers comfort and spiritual support to anyone who looks up and needs it. Photo courtesy of the church
