A local mechanic has branched into art and is selling her work at The Fix.
Tanya Korver is a trained aviation mechanic. About seven years ago, she left the aviation industry and started to work for Tolko. Her first stop was Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. She met her husband there and then moved to Slave Lake a few years ago to be a maintenance planner.
About a year and a half ago, she was visiting an old friend and saw some canvases in her garage. She asked the friend about them, and the friend suggested that they do a painting. Korver was hesitant, but the friend put on a tutorial video.
“It didn’t turn out bad,” says Korver.
Later a colleague was telling her she should get a hobby. She mentioned that she had done a painting and enjoyed it. However, her sister is a very talented artist, so Korver felt she couldn’t compete.
The friend replied, ‘It’s not about competition. It’s about relaxation.’
“He was right,” says Korver. “I started, and I couldn’t stop.”
A friend also gave her the to push to start selling her art. In The Fix a while ago, the friend told Fix owner Pierre Gauthier that she was an artist. Since then, he’s asked her a few times to put up her art.
“I thought I’d better put them up,” says Korver.
Korver paints with acrylic. She paints anything that piques her interest. This includes birds, outer space, and city scapes.

The third painting Korver did was this pelican. It is very detailed and realistic. Since then, she’s started to become more abstract in her art.
