Loon River First Nation teams won all three divisions of the 2023 Treaty 8 Cup hockey tournament in Slave Lake on April 2. Pictured is the Loon River Stars team in the Legends division. They beat out Driftpile Cree Nation.
In the women’s tournament Loon River beat Whitefish Lake in the final. In the men’s, Loon River and Bigstone Cree Nation from Wabasca played all three games of a best-of-three final on Sunday. It went the distance, with Loon River winning the third game quite late on Sunday evening.
Twenty-nine teams took part in the tournament, which was held for the first time since 2019.
