Shelly Ferguson of the Northern Haven Support Society had an empty van and high hopes on the morning of Aug. 20 in front of Slave Lake’s Walmart store. She (and some volunteer helpers) were there for Northern Haven’s annual ‘Fill the Van’ project. Shoppers were encouraged to fill the vehicle with school supplies for the kids who accompany their mothers to the women’s emergency shelter in Slave Lake over the course of the school year. It started slowly, Ferguson says, but by the end of the afternoon it picked up and the van was filled.
