Five Slave Lake area motocross racers won six medals on their home track at round seven of the Peace Motocross Association circuit.

Kevin Burley was first in both the MX 3 Junior and the Vet Junior. In the MX 3 Junior, Chase Labby was second. Slave Lake area racers nabbed the top spots in the 40 plus category. Mike Simonson was first followed by John Hunt in second. In the 50CC beginner, Lilly Burley was third.

The races were July 22 and 23 at the Flat Top Motocross Track southeast of Slave Lake. They were organized by the Slave Lake Motocross Association. It started back up last year after a long break. This was the first race it had held in many years.

In a news release, association president Luke Vondermuhll says, “The weather was beautiful and the storms skirted us for the most part, helping with the great track conditions.”

The board members and volunteers worked all summer to get the track and camping area ready, adds Vondermuhll.

“We had riders come from as far away as Prince George, BC and everywhere in between there and Slave Lake,” says Vondermuhll. “Turnout was amazing, with 180 riders in total participating in 292 gate starts. There was close to 90 campers and motorhomes, mostly towing utility trailers. Our camping area was very full, but we were able to accommodate everyone, including four food trucks. Spectator count was 667, including visitors and local area residents.”

Over the two days, motocross racers competed in 23 classes, with Slave Lake riders in 14 of those.
