From January to May, athletes from Slave Lake Gymnastics Association (SLGA) competed at various gymnastics and cheerleading competitions.
Cheerleading
Slave Lake has had a competitive ‘cheer’ team for a few years. They are called the Slave Lake Lightning.
The season started with the Cold Snap Classic January 19 to 21 at the Edmonton Expo. This was followed by Cheerific Western Cheer Challenge, February 16 to 17 in Morinville.
At Cheerific, “our team placed first, which was a huge success for our team,” says Abby Campbell, Slave Lake Gymnastics Association head coach.
The cheer duo of Chloe McDermott and Brookelyn Albert placed first in the U12 duo category.
March 15 to 16, Slave Lake Lightning competed at Rise Up Cheer Challenge in West Edmonton Mall. Both teams performed, with the duo winning third.
On Saturday, April 13, the team performed at All-Star Cheer Extravaganza in Edmonton. Slave Lake was sixth in the U12 Level 1A category.
Gymnastics
Slave Lake Gymnastics team has 10 competitive gymnasts. Nine are girls competing in the level 1 to 3 range. The final one is a boy.
On October 29, the competitive gymnasts attended a training camp at Pine Valley Gym Centre.
“We have a great relationship with Athabasca Flips Gymnastics Club,” says Campbell, “and they allow us to attend their gym’s mock meet, which was November 18th. Our team prepped for their real competitions at this mock meet to get them prepared for our upcoming competition season.”
Slave Lake gymnasts continued preparing for the season at a second Athabasca Flips mock meet on February 4.
Competition started on February 23, with the girls Copeland Classic in Spruce Grove. Six Slave Lake girls won medals – in their categories Nya, Nora, Adriana, Bella, and Stoli won silver and Emersyn won bronze.
On March 2 to 3, Coby McGillivary (10) the male gymnast was bronze in floor routine, at the boys Copeland Classic in Spruce Grove.
From March 8 to 10, the girls competed at Gymnastics in the Park in Sherwood Park.
All Slave Lake competitors won silver, says a SLGA social media post.
On March 23, the Slave Lake gymnasts won medals at Peace River Spring Fling Fun Meet.
Emerson won gold in her division, says a SLGA social media post, Nya won silver, and Stoli and Brookelyn each won bronze.
Slave Lake girls compete April 25 to 28 at Leduc Kanata Gymnastics Club Invitation. Coby competes on May 4 at Dynamyx Gymnastics Club in St. Albert.
