After a few year break, the E.G. Wahlstrom School students once again have the opportunity to lead clubs during breaks.
EGW is a Grade 4 to 6 public school in Slave Lake.
Principal Lisa Palko says, “During both the morning break and the afternoon break, students run clubs based on their interests. They plan the club and lead it; they find a staff member to supervise.”
“Student clubs began in the years prior to COVID and due to the restriction we have not been able to have them until this school year,” says Audrey Ghostkeeper, EGW vice principal. “They were initially started as a way of offering students voice, choice and opportunities to socialize with peers beyond their classroom or grade level.”
She adds, “It is also a great opportunity for relationships between students and staff to be built as staff volunteer their time to support the clubs, allowing them to engage with students beyond their class or grade level.”
Each club runs for two weeks.
The current clubs are Warrior Cats, Active Games, Just Dance, and Minecraft. These end on January 20, and will be replaced by four more clubs.
