A mistake in last week’s Leader had to do with a donation by CNRL to the Stage North Association. It was specifically for the coffee house held late last year, which benefited the food bank and Santa’s Anonymous.
A mill in Whitecourt, Alberta Newsprint Company, makes the paper this newspaper is printed on. It is one of the Alberta businesses which received an Emissions Reduction Alberta grant. The news release says that this mill received $10 million to improve energy efficiency.
A correction for the article on the ‘Business on the Lake’ article in last week’s Leader. The article says Community Futures Lesser Slave Lake partnered with Slave Lake Dental. The correct partnership is with Slave and Area Chamber of Commerce and Northern Lakes College.
One thing different about this year’s Orin Sand Memorial outdoor hockey tournament in Smith was the prize money factor. Last year they had it; this year they didn’t. The result? You might think fewer teams would be interested, especially since it was so much colder this time. But no, there were a dozen signed up and as far as we know a good time was had by all.
The idea of getting rid of the prize money, as far as we understand, was to tone down the competitiveness and eliminate some of the inevitable nastiness.
Did it work? One of the organizers said for the most part, yes, it did.

Why can’t we have some nice winter weather for a change? It’s been known to happen, but this time, perversely, Mother Nature said: ‘Okay! Now that I’ve hammered you with two weeks of frigid weather, now it’ll be so warm it’ll be sloppy and you’re going to lose your snow!’
Well, that’s how it looked when this was written. Maybe it turned out differently.
Speaking of winter weather, the two-week forecast we looked at said March 1 will have a high of -3. That’ll be just right for the outdoor curling bonspiel in Smith.
This just in: Alexa Briones, the national taekwondo champion from Slave Lake that we’ve been reporting on, has been invited to the World Taekwondo Cadet Championships.
The competition is in the United Arab Emirates in May. The Cadet division is for 11 – 13 year-olds.
Congratulations and good luck!
