Don’t forget to spring your clocks forward on Sunday, March 12. Cell phones, computers, smart watches, etc. will likely do it automatically, but wall clocks, regular watches, microwaves, stoves, and car clocks haven’t caught up with the times.

April 29 people have the choice of two concerts.

The Slave Lake Emergency Services Spring Fundraising Ball includes dinner and a show (Dueling Pianos) and starts at 5 p.m. and goes into the evening. It is at the Slave Lake Inn and Conference Centre.

Details about tickets for both are on the Lakeside Leader’s calendar of events.

Inga Lanctot called us last week (not for the first time) to say how impressed she continues to be by the lady who keeps Slave Lake’s ‘Kindness Tree’ well supplied with toques and mitts and such. These are for whoever needs them, and Kelly Culbert has been replenishing them as they are taken. We did make Kelly our Good Neighbour at some point. In the meantime, she and her husband Don have moved away, so she won’t be doing it anymore – at least not in Slave Lake.

There was an error in a front-page story last week. We reported that there was a 48-hour period for UCP candidates to appeal the results of the Feb. 25 and 26 vote for the party’s candidate for Lesser Slave Lake. We had heard that from one of the candidates, but found out later it’s actually a 14-day appeal period. Sorry about that.

There’s a fun event coming up in Wabasca this weekend. It’s called Community Carnival and it’s put on by the Bigstone Elders Advisory.

The fun kicks off on Friday, March 10, with the opening ceremony, event registration, a wiener roast and an evening skate.

Ice fishing begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 11. Besides that there’s a B.S. contest, log-sawing, nail-pounding, tea-making, moose-calling and even neckbone-eating competitions! Fireworks are at 10 p.m., over the lake.

On the Sunday are the event finals, and prize payouts.

To find out more, the Bigstone Elder Advisory is at 825-265-0048.

“We are smiling!” says M.D. of Lesser Slave River Reeve Murray Kerik. That’s his answer to a question about whether there’s any good news in the new provincial budget about funding for the replacement of the Smith bridge. More he wouldn’t say, because the province asked the M.D. to keep quiet about it until this Thursday.

Shelly Ferguson of the Northern Haven Support Society called last week with an update on the funding situation for 2023.

“We got all our grant money, so we’re good to go for another year,” she said.

Northern Haven operates a women’s emergency shelter in Slave Lake, and does outreach work in the community.

March 11 and March 12 Slave Lake Minor Soccer Association is holding a camp for U5 and U11.
A link to registration is on the event on The Leader calendar. It was too long to type out.

The low winter sun makes some pretty shadows on fresh snow.
