We hear John McDermott of Slave Lake has taken on the job of fire marshall for the entire territory of Nunavut. That’ll be quite a change from being deputy chief of the Lesser Slave Regional Fire Service, which is what he’s been doing for the past several years. We wish him all the best!

Perri Walker celebrated her _-first birthday at The Leader last Tuesday. We were going to have that many candles on her cake, but changed our minds at the last minute due to the strong possibility that much flame in such a small space might set off fire alarms and have the fire department down on us.

Happy birthday!

A month into wildfire season and Slave Lake Forest Area has had its first few wildfires. All have been small.
On April 10, a 0.4 hectare grass fire was quickly extinguished, says a wildfire update from Leah Lovequist, with Alberta Wildfire. Between that day and April 15, there was one more small wildfire bringing the total burned to 0.41 hectares. The wildfire danger was moderate.

Thank you to a Leader reader for pointing out that the mat program has not always been run by the Slave Lake Homeless Coalition Society.

The article about the new executive director online has been updated to say, “Since 2014, there has been a mat program in Slave Lake.”

From 2014 to April 2021, the Slave Lake Native Friendship Centre ran the mat program. There was a ‘stakeholder group’ sometimes called the Homeless Coalition, but the Homeless Coalition did’t start running the mat program until 2021, when it became a society.
