Slave Lake’s U11 Heat was as good as gold in the Mid-Summer Classic baseball tournament in Grande Prairie on the June 17 weekend. Four games, four wins and some hardware to bring home.
“They played very well,” says coach Trevor Vance.
The Heat played two Grande Prairie teams, as well as one from Valleyview and one from Beaverlodge. Asked who were the stand-outs for the team in the GP wins, Vance says it really was a team effort, with everybody contributing. A lot of the boys were given a chance at pitching, he says, with a view to finding out who can do what when the provincial playdown rounds begin.
The whole team did well at the plate, but Vance did mention Wabasca’s Chase Sinclair in particular.
“We call him Baby Babe Ruth,” he says. “He is a masher.”
Sinclair hit several home runs in the tournament. Wyatt Vance and Tyler Edwards also stood out with the bats, says the coach.
What’s next for the Heat wasn’t clear at the time of the interview, but word came through just before press time that the Heat would be hosting on the July 8 weekend.
