Seniors have given a lot to society, and Seniors Week, June 3 to 9 is a chance to thank them. Groups in Slave Lake, Smith, and Joussard are holding events.

Vanderwell Heritage Place has a whole week of events, which are open to all seniors. The Town of Slave Lake, Big Lakes County, Rotary Club of Slave Lake, Slave Lake and Area Mental Health Network (SLAM), the Slave Lake Native Friendship Centre, and Smith Half-Century Plus are also holding some events.

Events held at Vanderwell (aka. the lodge) are open to seniors, who live in the community as well as lodge residents. Vanderwell’s shuttle bus will be available free for seniors in the community wishing to attend. Please call 780-805-2431 and give sufficient notice. 

Monday, June 3

On June 3 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., the town is holding a pancake breakfast at the Pioneer Drop-In Centre in Slave Lake. This is free for seniors.

At 2 p.m., Vanderwell (aka. the lodge) is holding bingo. Lodge events are open to seniors living in the community.

Tuesday, June 4

On Tuesday, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., the lodge is holding a free BBQ (for seniors) in the lodge parking lot.

From 2 to 3:30 p.m., the lodge is holding make your own dessert in the lodge rec room.

On Tuesday from 6:30 to 7 p.m., Susanne Campbell’s piano students are performing in the lodge rec room.

In Smith, on Tuesday June 4, the Smith Half-Century Plus Drop-In Centre is holding bingo. Doors open at 6 p.m. Bingo starts at 7.

Wednesday, June 5

On Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the lodge, SLAM, and the Slave Lake Library are holding ‘Picnic and Games in the Park.’

The event includes chair yoga, games, and a picnic.

Registration is required. Sign up by calling Vanderwell Heritage Place at 780-805-2431. Shuttle bus is free to transport seniors from the lodge and in the community to this event. To book your place, call the above number, with sufficient notice.

On Wednesday, June 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., there is a free barbecue in Rennie Hall Plaza on Main Street. This is open to everyone.

Big Lakes County also has an event for seniors week in Joussard. It is the ‘Lakeshore Luncheon’ on June 5. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon. The lunch is provided by Big Lakes County Family and Community Support Services.

At 2 p.m., the lodge has an excursion for ice cream at A&W.

Thursday, June 6

On Thursday at 10 a.m., seniors can stop by for coffee, conversation, and Anna’s Donuts in the lodge rec room.

On Thursday starting at 2 p.m., the lodge has crib in the lodge rec room. It costs $1 per game, with snacks and beverages provided.

Friday, June 7

On Friday, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., the lodge is taking a trip to visit to Lisa’s Greenhouse in Widewater. Registration is required for the 10 spaces. Sign up at the front desk or call 780-805-2431
From noon to 3 p.m., the Friendship Centre is holding a free barbecue and concert.

“It’s really for seniors,” say Barb Courtorielle, Friendship Centre executive director, “but I’m not going to chase people away especially if they want to bring their grandkids.”

The Rocky Walker Band will perform at the barbecue.

That day from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., the lodge is holding a Seniors Week Wrap up with the Smith Old Time Fiddle Band in rec room. 

Saturday, June 8

Smith is holding and Art Walk and barbecue (see Page 9). This isn’t for seniors week, but seniors a group of seniors will perform.
