Noticed a lot of moustaches around lately? This is the first year, the Lesser Slave Regional Fire Service (LSRFS) has a Movember team (photo on Page 9).

Mitchell Mann, LSRFS senior fire fighter, has done Movember for seven years. This year, he organized a team for LSRFS.

The main symbol of Movember, which falls in November, is moustaches, so all of the male firefighters are growing one.

Movember is about men’s health including cancer and mental health, says Mann. “It’s a really big deal for firefighters,” he says.

Firefighters are at higher risk of cancer, because of the carcinogens they are exposed to fighting fires, he adds. They now use special soap to make sure they get it all off their skin.

As of Nov. 17, the team had raised $180, which Mann said was “pretty cool.”

All funds raised go to Movember.

Movember’s website says, “We are the leading charity changing the face of men’s health. We know what works for men – and what doesn’t.”

Movember has three focuses: mental health and suicide prevention, prostrate cancer, and testicular cancer.

For some reason, the search engine on movember.com doesn’t bring up the most recent LSRFS Fire, so type https://movember.com/t/lsrfs-fire?mc=1 into your web browser, if you want to donate.

The money raised will go to support mental health through the Movember Conversations program.
