At the regional meet in Grande Prairie, Aug. 5 – 7, several members of the Slave Lake Sharks Swim Club held the form they had displayed all summer and qualified for the provincial championships. Those were held this past weekend in Edmonton (results not in by press time).

The Slave Lake swimmers put on quite a show at regionals, winning 20 gold medals – 19 of them by individuals and one in a team event.

Starting with the oldest member of the squad, Darcy Garratt won gold in 400m and 800m freestyle races.
Ethan McLaren won his 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 50m butterfly races and placed second in 50m freestyle.

Grace Auger was golden in 50m free, 200m free and 50m butterfly. She placed second in the 100m medley race.

Eleanor Friesen swept her races, taking gold in each of the 800m free, 100m breaststroke, 100m medley and 200m medley.

Taylor Friesen had the golden trifecta, winning the 800m free, 1,500m free and 100m fly. She was second in the 200m medley.

Jorgia Green took first place in the 200m free, 50m fly and 100m medley. She was second in the 200m medley.

Brie Hoover was second in the 1,500m free.

Leanne McLeod got second place in the 200m free.

Sadie Poitras won gold in the 25m back and second in 50m free and 50m back.

Soleil Pugliese won her 50m breaststroke race and was second in the 100m breaststroke.

In the team events, the foursome of Eleanor Friesen, Soleil Pugliese, J. Green and Brie Hoover won the 4 x 50m medley.

Four other Slave Lake teams won silver in relays: Auger, Pugliese, Hoover and Friesen in the 4 x 50m free, McLeod, Briones, Green and Green in the 4 x 50m free, Friesen, Comeau, Williams and McLaren in the 4 x 50m free and the same group in the 4 x 50m medley.

The top two finishers in each final qualified for provincials. Whether they took part or not is another story – one we hope to have next week.
