Hold your horses, folks. It might be finished by now, but as of sometime last week, the Rotary Club was still going over its NHL playoff pool entries with a find-toothed comb, and finding a few mistakes in the way they were entered. Word is it was taking longer than usual to clean that stuff up. Meaning what? Meaning the results are not as official as they look on officepools.com until that process is complete.

How about that black pickup truck sitting in the bush beside Hwy. 2 east of Slave Lake? How many months is that thing going to be there? It’s probably one of those situations where the owner has just walked away from it, and nobody else wants the trouble or expense of hauling it out of there.
That was more or less the explanation we got a couple of years ago, when we asked what was going on with a car deep in the ditch off Hwy. 88 north of Slave Lake. It was there for at least two months before somebody did something.

You might have been wondering about a brand-new road that heads off Hwy. 2 just this side of the Athabasca River bridge. It turns out it goes to a gravel pit and asphalt plant set up a few kilometres in there, by E Construction. It’ll be supplying the paving job that the company is due to start on Hwy. 2 just after the long weekend!

Some people get nervous on or around May 15 every year. That’s the anniversary of the wildfires that destroyed so much property around here in 2011. But no worries this time, as cool, wet weather moved in on the 16th. The threat isn’t over, of course, but with things greening up, the hazard declines.
Speaking of green-up, it seems to be taking longer than usual.

Last weekend was ‘May long,’ so there’s a good chance the many people were doing one of two things: camping or planting their garden.
We’ve seen a few bedding plants out on people’s decks and in planters, but we assume those go inside at night.
No one wants to say it, but there could still be frost or even snow in the coming weeks.
