Rumour has it Northern Lakes College has purchased the Diamond Willow property, next to Marten Beach. The person we heard it from seemed to know what he was talking about, but we’ve not had it confirmed by anyone at the college. NLC has become a lot more formal over the years in its communications (I.e. slower), but they always come through eventually.

Has anyone seen any Himalayan balsam growing where it shouldn’t be? If so, contact your M.D. weed inspector or ag fieldperson. That stuff is rated as prohibited noxious in Alberta and municipalities are bound by law to control it. Or if it’s in town, let the town know. The town has a designated weed control person. Our impression is weed control is well down on that person’s list of priorities and probably the only way anything will get done is if somebody complains about it.

Tom Moore, formerly of Widewater and the manager of the regional landfill for several years, is retiring from a similar job in Westlock after seven years. Moore told the Westlock News he’s starting his own consulting business “for small, rural remote sites, to do similar (work).” All the best to Tom and his family.

Smith Pizza & Donair had what was probably an unexpected rush of business in the early afternoon of July 12. With only two people working it was touch and go for a while there, but they managed to get everybody fed, and we didn’t hear anybody complaining about the food. The reason for all the extra business was the arrival of the 2023 Fort Assiniboine Bicentennial Voyageur Canoe Brigade. That was an extra 130-plus people in town, although the lunchtime rush was more from spectators who had shown up to see the arrival of the voyageurs.

The two hardworking guys were owner Waheed and his son Waleed.

Hey, it was nice to see good old Bernie Kreiner in Smith last week. He was a member of ‘Blazing Paddles,’ a canoe crew from Hinton, taking part in the Fort Assiniboine Bicentennial Voyageur Canoe Brigade. Bernie was town manager for Slave Lake in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was keen on canoeing then, if we remember correctly, and it turns out he still is. He retired a few years ago after many years as CAO of the town of Hinton.

Thanks to an entry in the Canyon Creek Canada Day parade, we ended up learning that former Slave Lake resident Kimberly Poitras won three golds in Artistic Swimming at the 2022 National Championship. Thanks also to a reader for bringing it to our attention.

Congratulations to Kimberly and all the best to her in the future competitions!
