Pembina Pipelines donated $5,000 last week to the Slave Lake Homeless Coalition, to help with the expenses of setting up and running an overnight shelter in Slave Lake for homeless people. Presenting the cheque for Pembina are Rodney Cardinal, centre, and Marilyn McClelland, right, to Jule Asterisk of the Homeless Coalition. Asterisk says the timing of the donation was very fortunate, as the shelter has opened up (as of Oct. 30) and the major grant the group has been hoping for had not yet arrived from the Alberta Rural Development Network. Asterisk says the program has been averaging five people per night, with eight individuals having been accommodated so far. “We started our Sweetgrass Supports program,” she says, “with discussions around COVID. All but one of the clients have tried the free rapid tests – all testing negative.
